COROBOR and the ASECNA celebrate the fourth anniversary of MESSIR in Dakar

THE FOURTH anniversary of the installation of MESSIR at the Agency for Air Safety in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) based in Dakar, Senegal, has just been celebrated.
The MESSIR-COMM system was installed in May 1996 and has, during these four years of continuous operation (NO interruption of service during 4 years), been dealing with all the meteorological telecommunications handled by the Dakar Regional Telecommunications Hub, providing full satisfaction to its users.
The installation of this first MESSIR system was followed by 10 MESSIR-SADIS systems to several member-countries of the ASECNA : Ivory Coast, Niger, Congo, Benin, Cameroon, Gabon, chad, Guinea.
Jean-Paul Makosso, the ASECNA's Director of Meteorological Operations, said : "MESSIR-COMM has been giving us full satisfaction by ensuring connections with Toulouse, Nairobi and the ACMAD in Niger. This equipment is very important for us since it guarantees the safe reception of data coming from Europe and East Africa, and the exportation of the ASECNA's own data.
"MESSIR gives us the possibility to deal with a very important flow of data and exchange this data very efficiently thanks to its large database."
The MESSIR-COMM system in operation at the ASECNA deals with two X25 connections to Toulouse (Météo-France) - for the reception of SYNOPs, upper air observations, graphical and alphanumerical data,

MESSIR user at the ASECNA

receives data from the Niamey RTH via X25, and data from the local AFTN network. The data received is also distributed within the Dakar Yoff Airport.
Overall, an average of 100,000 messages per month is sent and received by MESSIR-COMM.
A MESSIR-SADIS workstation has also been installed at the ASECNA headquarters for forecasting and pilot met briefing purposes. In addition to SADIS, it receives data from MESSIR-COMM.
Mr Makosso said : "We are really satisfied with MESSIR-SADIS. The system works perfectly, takes little space, is inexpensive, and respects the standards set by the WMO."
